Lechuza ride past Piaget 11-7 in US Open Polo Championship
In another crucial game of the United States Open Polo Championship, Lechuza cruised past Piaget by four goals and improved its position in the tournament. Interestingly, every player of Lechuza partook in the scoring and made their commanding victory possible
in the match.
The first set of play completely belonged to Lechuza which earned five goals while allowing Piaget only a single point. Three players of Lechuza started hurling shots on Piaget goal in the first set of play and succeeded in scoring. Juan Martin Nero added
two goals while Martin Espain and Sapo Caset notched one goal each to establish their first lead. Nachi Heguy scored the only goal for Piaget and trailed by four points, 5-1 after the first seven and half minutes of play.
In a stunning move, the strikers of Lechuza expanded the lead up to six points in the second round. The stiff defence of Lechuza displayed an impressive show and kept Piaget off the scorecard throughout the period. Caset marked another couple of goals, of
which one was scored on a penalty shot while the other was from the field. The chukka concluded with Lechuza holding a six-point lead, 7-1 in the game.
At last the strikers of Piaget cranked up their offence, but could not reduce the wide difference. The strikers of Lechuza committed fouls and gave Piaget spot shots, which they did not miss. Lolo Castagnola converted a couple of penalty shots while his
team-mate Nachi Heguy managed another penalty conversion to cut the lead down to three points. Nero and Caset scored one goal each in the period and led the game at half-time with a convincing five-point, 9-5 advantage.
After the first half action, the pace of the game became quite slow and both teams could only manage three goals in the period. The fourth set of play was opened with a 60-yard penalty conversion and a field effort from Matt Coppola. Castagnola of Piaget
connected on another spot shot to remain in the game. Lechuza was hanging on to a six-point lead, 11-5 after the four-chukkas of play.
The strikers of Lechuza cooled down after the four-periods of action and failed to add any other goal in the last two sets of play. It seemed that the attackers of Lechuza were taking a rest and enjoying the game. However, Piaget were not ready to give up,
as Castagnola scored off another penalty shot in the fifth period of play and cut the lead down to five points, 11-6.
The final period of play was also quite low scoring and only one goal was scored in the final seven minutes of the game. Heguy managed the final punch for Piaget, but it did not serve any purpose, as Lechuza won the game by a commanding four goals, 11-7.
The triumph also lifted Lechuza in the group standings, as they have won two games. On the other hand, Piaget has lost two games.
