Lee-Anne Pace, Tandi Cuningham falter in the first round, shoot three-over
The first round of the South African Women’s Open has ended and the South African starts, Lee-Anne Pace and Tandi Cuningham are tied for 21st position with a score of 3-over par 75.
This development has shocked many fans and experts. These two were clearly the tournament’s favourites and fans expected some sizzling performances from the two seasoned players.
What went wrong in the Selborne Park Golf Club? Experts are stumped for an answer and the players have not offered an explanation. The fans are equally disappointed and the leaderboard does not offer any hope.
Despite the dismal performance by the leading stars, all is not lost for South African golf. Although a foreigner led the first round, there are South African players in the top-10.
This is a good sign that South African women golf is not dependent upon stars only. It has second-tier players who are good enough to take on the best international players.
The best South African player so far is Stacy Lee Bregman.  She tied for the second place with three other players, with a score of 71. She played a great game and is just 2 strokes behind the German player Caroline Masson.
Bregman is not the only South African player in the top-10. There is also another favourite of the fans and experts alike, Ashleigh Simon, at number six.
She scored 72 points, despite a serious stomach infection. She is expected to do well now that she is recovering from her illness.
The third South African player in top-10 is Morgana Robbertze. A relatively unknown player, she managed to score 73 points and secured the ninth position. She is a surprise for many observers, as she made it into the top-10 in the presence of such good players.
The first round was a disappointment for fans as Pace and Cuningham missed the top positions on the leaderboard. However, many experts predict that the players have the potential of making a comeback in the coming rounds.
Pace is particularly known for such comebacks. She has played exceptional golf before the event and can recover from the rough patch she is going through right now.
