Lee Chong Wei and Vivian Hoo bag Mixed Doubles title at Selangor Open – Badminton news
Malaysia’s Men’s Singles top shuttler and World Number One Lee Chong Wei surprised his fans by winning a title in Mixed Doubles category with his partner Vivian Hoo at Selangor Open, on Sunday, February 26, in Kuala Lumpur.
In the title match, Chong Wei – Vivian Hoo overpowered the top seeds Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in straight games to claim the crown.
Chong Wei did not compete in the Men’s Singles category in order to give back-up shuttlers a chance to show their potential in this local tournament.
However, in order to support the local tournament and also to have fun, Chong Wei participated in Mixed Doubles category.
No one was expecting him to deliver such a tremendous performance in the Mixed Doubles match as he is a professional shuttler in Men’s Singles category.
Nevertheless, his fans were quite happy with his victory as he with his partner provided a wonderful show of top quality badminton and proved that he can also play in the Doubles format as well.
After winning the match, Chong Wei said, “It is a real surprise to win the mixed doubles. I will continue to have fun in the local meet. I may take part in the men’s doubles next. I still want our youngsters to fight for honours in the men’s singles.”
In the final contest, Chong Wei – Vivian Hoo showed impressive performance in the opening set of the match and entertained the huge local crowd by playing against the best couple in Malaysia.
On the other hand, the top seeds Peng Soon and Liu Ying could not control the aggression of their opponents and remained trailing on the score board.
Chong Wei – Vivian Hoo did not face much trouble from their compatriots in the first game and won it with a remarkable margin of 21-15.
In the second game, Peng Soon and Liu Ying played better badminton and remained close to their opponents in the whole set. Both sides showed wonderful aggression and continued playing at their best speed.
The well positioned smashes of Chong Wei disturbed the defence of Peng Soon – Liu Ying as they could not dominate the pace of rallies.
The score was 25-25 when Chong Wei – Vivian Hoo showed aggression and took the ending points to win the set with a 27-25 score on the board.
Chong Wei – Vivian Hoo won this final match against the best shuttlers in Malaysia by a 21-15 and 27-25 score on the board.
