Lee Chong Wei annihilates Sung Hwan Park in Men’s Singles round-of-16: 2011 World Championships
Top Malaysian shuttler, Lee Chong Wei proved that he fittingly occupies the World Number One spot as he slaughtered Korea’s Sung Hwan Park in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 at the 2011 World Championships, being held at the Wembley Arena in London, on Thursday,
August 11.
World Number One and top seed in the Men’s Singles draw, Chong Wei took only 29 minutes to prove his supremacy in the game by crushing his opponents in straight-sets with a dramatic margin of 21-10 and 21-5.
The 28-year-old Chong Wei opened his campaign against the Korean with a complete and firm grip on the pace of the bird. He was floating all around in the court and covered the distance with highest speed which shut the doors of success for Sung Hwan, who
did not even show a fighting spirit throughout the match.
In the opening game, the Malaysian established a comfortable lead in the start and successfully maintained it in the whole set. He kept his focus in winning one point after the other and found no trouble at all from his challenger. Chong Wei finished-off
the opening set with a stunning margin of 21-10.
In the following game, Chong Wei was in his own class as he rushed towards the ending points against the Korean, who was hardly resisting in the match. The top seed finished-off the second game by playing top-class badminton with the dramatic score of 21-5.
After winning the round-of-16 match, Chong Wei said, “It was my easiest win over Park. I am really surprised by how easily I won as I was expecting a stiffer challenge from him. Sung-hwan neither attacked nor showed any urgency to get back into the game.
He lost his confidence quite early in the game.”
He further added, “I feel good. This is my best game of the tournament so far. I just want to keep this rhythm going.”
Chong Wei is set to meet Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon, who defeated Spain’s Pablo Abian in the Men’s Singles round-of-16.
