Lee Chong Wei beats Peter Hoeg Gade to win third Super Series title: Indian Open Super Series 2011
Malaysian shuttler Lee Chong Wei grabbed the third Super Series title of his career after he crushed Denmark’s Peter Hoeg Gade 21-12, 12-21, 21-15 in the final match of the inaugural Indian Open Super Series 2011 at New Delhi, India.
The world number one Wei took an hour to nudge his opponent down.
No local player could make his way to the final stage of the event and emerge as champion. Only two of nine Indians, Sourabh Verma and Gurusai Datt managed to reach the quarter-final stage where they lost to Lee Chong Wei and Yun Hu respectively.
A seven-point knock brought Wei at 9-4 and he got a strong position in the first set which he won by 21-12 with a decent five-point break at 16-12. The second set was a topsy-turvy affair as the Danish sprang back hard upon the Malaysian top star and gave
him the taste of his own medicine after he took the set convincingly with 12-21.
The world number three Gade took early lead in the third rattling set at 1-5 but soon Wei went ahead of Gade at 8-5 after picking six consecutive points. However, the game moved into a see saw situation as both players tussled for victory but the 28-year-old
Wei clinched the set with 21-15 and took the third Super Series title of his career.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s young Porntip Buranaprasertsuk grabbed her first women’s title after defeating Bae Youn-joo of Korea 21-13, 21-16 with relative ease. The Thai’s extraordinary badminton skills astounded the veteran commentator Gill Clark and he had
to say that the young shuttler was an “exciting talent.”
Both ladies went on struggling in the first set with long rallies and close shots, however, Porntip edged past the Korean with her terrific court craft and breathtaking strokes she played during the match. The Thai gave proof of her wrist power in the second
game as the 19-year-old smashed brilliantly and made a couple of stunning long shots to unsettle her opponent completely at 21-16 with her power package.
