Lee Chong Wei clobbers Lee Hyun Il in the Men’s Singles: 2011 India Open Super Series
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei faced no difficulty in beating Lee Hyun Il of Korea in the Men’s Singles of pre-quarter-final match in the 2011 India Open Super Series, in India, on Thursday, April 28.
The world number one and top seed of the championship, Chong Wei, consumed only 31 minutes to chuck out the Lee Hyun, who threw away Indonesia’s Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka in the first round of the event. In the quarter-final, the top seed will face Sourabh
Verma of India who crushed the seventh seed, Kenichi Tago of Japan, in the round-of-16.
Chong Wei opened his campaign against the Korean in a dominating way. He was perfect in his shot selection and execution of the strokes. His net strokes together with powerful smashes built immense pressure on Lee Hyun. The Korean tried to break the flow
of the Malaysian, but failed to control the rallies. Chong Wei built a 6-point lead of 11-5 at the interval.
After the break, the Malaysian continued his superb run by playing flawless badminton. Lee Hyun tried his best to reduce the huge gap of points, but lost his control over the bird and made many errors. Chong Wei clinched the opening set of the match with
a wonderful margin of 21-13, in just 14 minutes.
In the opening half of the second set, the Korean remained close of the top seed by playing better game. Both shuttlers remained toe-to-toe by playing at the same speed. The score was 8-8, where Chong Wei increased the speed of the rallies and managed to
build an 11-9 lead at the end of the opening part.
The world number one remained on the winning track after the one-minute break and reached at 19-11. Lee Hyun lifted up his speed and played superbly that earned him six pints in a row. The Korean narrowed the gap by reaching 17-19, where Chong Wei scored
two consecutive points and finished the set with a 21-17 margin, in 17 minutes. The closing score of this 31-minute two-set fight was 21-13 and 21-17.
