Lee Chong Wei cruises into Men’s Singles second round of the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series
Malaysia’s most celebrated shuttler, Lee Chong Wei, cruised into the Men’s Singles second round after taming Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto in the first round of the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series 2011. The encounter was held in Indonesia, on Wednesday,
June 22.
The 28-year-old Chong Wei, who is currently enjoying the Number One position in the Men’s Singles world rankings, spent only 33 minutes to chuck out Sugiarto in a straight-set battle, without facing any considerable resistance from the Indonesian.
The crowd enjoyed the opening set of the match, where both contestants put up a good show of top-class badminton. Chong Wei was leading the score table by reaching 11-8, until the one-minute interval of the first set.
After the break, a relaxed but quick Chong Wei controlled the rallies and made Sugiarto move around in all corners of the court to return the well-executed strokes by the Malaysian. The Indonesian was lacking the finishing touch in his shots, as he executed
powerful smashes but failed to earn points against the incredible defence of Chong Wei.
The Malaysian was playing without any haste to get familiar with the conditions of the indoor stadium. He clinched the first game with a five-point margin of 21-16, by spending 19 minutes on the court.
In the second game, the World Number One lifted his level of play and started to employ his powerful down the line smashes, coupled with spinning net strokes. His deceptive shots kept Sugiarto guessing where the bird will land, which made the Indonesian
slow. At the interval, Chong Wei reached at 11-4.
After the break, the Malaysian maintained his speed and accuracy against the Indonesian, who was struggling to pick the bird early. Chong Wei grabbed the second game in just 14 minutes by a stunning score of 21-8. The end result of this straight-game match
was 21-16 and 21-8.
In the Men’s Singles second round, Chong Wei will be up against either Wing Ki Wong of Hong Kong or Brice Leverdez of France.
