Lee Chong Wei decides to attend an eight-day training camp at University of Bath: Badminton News
Malaysia’s ace shuttler, Lee Chong Wei, has decided to attend an eight-day training camp at the University of Bath in England, before the 2011 World Badminton Championships, which will be held at the Wembley Indoor Arena in London from August 8 to 14.
Chong Wei did not attend the last year’s 10-day camp at Bath, before the 2010 World Championships, held in Paris, France. The Former National coach, Misbun Sidek, together with Chong Wei decided to train at home instead of travelling to England, while Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles top seeds, Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat attended the training camp.
Chong Wei could not pass the quarter-final stage in the 2010 World Championships, whereas the other pair, Boon Heong and Koo Kien, played the final of the championship. By keeping this experience into consideration, the Men’s Singles national coach, Rashid Sidek, has decided to send Chong Wei along with three elite shuttlers in England to attend this training camp.
"The Bath stint will be ideal for Chong Wei as the World Championships will be in London this time and it will be easy for him to acclimatise," Rashid said.
He further added, "We have also requested for three players to accompany him as Chong Wei is the only national singles shuttler to qualify for the World Championships and needs quality sparring to be well prepared for the event.”
The three players are Chan Kwong Beng, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren. These players will assist World Number One in his training sessions. Two of these three shuttlers will return after the completion of the training camp, whereas one will travel to London with Chong Wei.
Rashid Sidek said, "The training should last for about eight days. The exact dates will be confirmed soon."
Chong Wei has never passed the semi-final stage in the World Championships. He is now willing to break the dead-lock by winning this mega event. If he manages to win the title, he will become the first world champion from Malaysia as no Malaysian has ever won this event in the history of the country.
