Lee Chong Wei defeats Peter Hoeg Gade to win inaugural India Open Super Series 2011
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei emerged as the champion of the first edition of India Open Super Series 2011 after defeating Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark in the men’s singles final on Sunday.
The top seed Chong Wei took 62 minutes to get rid of the number three seed Peter Gade in a thrilling three-set final in front of a packed indoor arena in New Delhi, India. The Danish, who proved his worth against Sung Hwan Park of Korea in the semi-final,
failed to continue his winning run against the world number one.
“It was good to see that Chong Wei regained control after losing the second game. This shows that is becoming better as a player and is more focused,” said Teh Seu Bock, coach of Chong Wei. He further added, “It was not an easy win for him at all today.
Peter was in immaculate form. I am happy that Chong Wei handled the pressure very well.”
Right from the start of the opening set of the match, the Malaysian played his usual deceptive and perfect game. He picked the bird quite early from all areas of the court and remained far ahead of the Danish veteran in the entire set. Chong Wei clinched
the opening set in just 18 minutes by a wonderful margin of 21-12.
Peter Gade bounced back in the second set in an impressive manner and quickly established a wonderful lead of 11-5. The Danish was playing superb badminton against the top seed and maintained a good difference throughout the second set.
Chong Wei struggled hard to level the gap but failed to do so as his opponent was playing a perfect game. Peter Gade won the second set with a 21-12 margin by consuming just 19 minutes.
In the final set, both shuttlers played equally well in the first half. However, in the second part after the interval, Chong Wei managed to take a good lead and won the third set by 21-15 margin in 25 minutes. The final score of the superb 62-minute final
was 21-12, 12-21 and 21-15.
