Lee Chong Wei defends his title by beating Lin Dan in the All England Open Premier Super Series 2011
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei successfully defended his title by beating Lin Dan of China in the Men’s Singles final of the All England Open Premier Super Series 2011, at Birmingham, England today, March 15, 2011. The world number one and top seed of the event,
Chong Wei, consumed 52 minutes to prove his supremacy against the most celebrated athlete and arch rival, Lin, who was the number three seed in the event. In their previous 22 meetings, Lin clearly leads the table by a huge difference of 15-7.
Lin Dan has already defeated the Malaysian on different occasions including the final of 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Chinese defeated Chong Wei in the Korea Open Premier Super Series 2011, on the 30th of January, in Seoul, South Korea. But this
time, Chong Wei was more prepared than before and came in the court with a different set of strategy in mind.
Right from the start of the opening set, both shuttlers put up a great show in a packed Indoor Arena in Birmingham. The score progressed with tight difference as both players, two of the best shuttlers in the world of badminton, made full use of their experience
to trouble each other. Till the interval, the Malaysian was leading by a one-point margin at 11-10. After the one-minute-rest, both players remained close till 15-15, where Chong Wei played some wonderful strokes and won the opening set with a decent gap of
21-17, in 25 minutes.
In the second game, Lin worked very hard to take lead but Chong Wei was more alert this time as he spared no chance for the Chinese to dominate the game. The Malaysian was ahead of the opponent by 11-9, till the break. After the 60-second-interval, the Chinese
again tried to accelerate the pace of the game but Chong Wei had all the answers to the powerful strokes driven by the opponent. The world number one clinched the second game with the same margin of 21-17, by spending 27 minutes in the court. The concluding
score of this superb 52-minute-match was 21-17 and 21-17.
