Lee Chong Wei did not play his normal game against Shon Wan Ho, says national coach Tey Seu Bock
Malaysia’s national coach Tey Seu Bock said that the World Number One Lee Chong Wei did not play his normal game and committed too many errors which cost him title as he lost to Korea’s Shon Wan Ho in the final contest of India Open Super Series 2012 on Sunday, April 29, in India.
Chong Wei, the best player in Malaysia and top shuttler in the world rankings, was certainly not at his best while playing against Wan Ho in the title match.
The Malaysian made many uncharacteristic mistakes and unexpectedly lost the match letting the Korean to take his first ever title in a Super Series tournament.
On the other hand, the lower ranked Wan Ho put on tremendous show of elevated badminton against the top seeded Malaysian player and wrapped up the title by winning the final encounter with a thrilling score of 18-21, 21-14 and 19-21.
While talking about Chong Wei’s defeat the coach Seu Bock said it has nothing to do with his injury or lack of playing matches in the last six weeks.
According to the coach, Chong Wei committed too many errors which took the title away from him.
However, he also appreciated Wan Ho for playing spectacular badminton in the final encounter.
Seu Bock said, “The defeat has nothing to do with the earlier injury or that he didn’t play enough matches. He just made too many mistakes and was unable to play his own game.”
The coach also appreciated the wonderful play of Wan Ho who created the biggest upset of his career.
The coach said, “But credit to Wan-ho. He was all fired up and played very well. He also had a game plan in mind and executed it to perfection.”
He further added, “This loss may have came at a bad time since it’s the Olympic year but there is still time and I believe that Chong Wei can regain his confidence in no time.”
It seemed that Chong Wei took pressure of being the top seed in India Open and failed to dominate the pace of rallies in the ending set of the final contest.
Chong Wei was the defending champion in this tournament but failed to defend his title against the in-form Korean who played flawless badminton and chuck out the top seed in a hard-fought three-set contest.
