Lee Chong Wei eases into Men’s Singles second round of the 2011 Hong Kong Open Super Series
Malaysia’s ace shuttler, Lee Chong Wei eases into Men’s Singles second round after taming Spain’s Pablo Abian in the first round contest of the 2011 Hong Kong Open Super Series, in Hong Kong, on Wednesday, November 16.
The top seed Chong Wei, who is also presently World Number One in the Men’s Singles world rankings, showed no mercy to the Spanish and thrashed him with a comfortable margin. The Malaysian finished off the battle by spending just 25 minutes in the court.
The Spanish played well in the opening points but failed to match the speed and skill of his higher ranked opponent throughout the match.
Chong Wei, who is known for his deceptive and powerful strokes, opened his journey against Abian in the opening round battle in his usual aggressive way. He missed no opportunity of smashing the bird hard followed by impressive net killings. He dictated
the pace and made his opponent moving around in the court with his wonderful driving rallies.
The top seed was employing his elite skills against the Spanish who failed to create opportunities to dominate the game. Until the one-minute interval, the local shuttler was moving far ahead by reaching at 11-7.
After the break, Chong Wei again continued his journey in the same attacking fashion. His fast speed at the net and powerful down the line smashes helped him greatly in winning the opening set with a stunning score of 21-13, by consuming just 12 minutes
in the court.
Abian changed his game in the second set as he played with aggression this time. He was quicker at the net to keep Chong Wei away in the defensive position. However, the top seed put more variations in his strokes and started to play with deception at the
net.
Chong Wei worked a little hard in the second game as compared to the first set as Abian played better badminton this time. After a good fight, the top seed won the second set with a margin of 21-15, in just 13 minutes. The concluding score of this straight
set first round match was 21-13 and 21-15.
