Lee Chong Wei faces uphill task at the 2011 World Championships – Badminton News
Malaysian shuttler, Lee Chong Wei, is set to face a tough Men’s Singles draw in his road towards the final of the 2011 World Championships, which are set to take place from August 8-14, in London, England.
Chong Wei, who has been holding the Number One position in the international rankings from the last three years because of his consistent performance, is expected to play against Chinese shuttlers before reaching in the final of the event.
While talking about the Men’s Singles draw of the World Championships, Chong Wei said, “I suspected from the beginning, that I will be playing at least two China players from the quarter-finals. And I've got the stronger two in Chen Long (in the last eight)
and Chen Jin (in the semis).”
However, the top seed is also alert with his early rounds’ opponents, as he does not want to underestimate anyone in the mega event. He said, “I also have some good players in early matches, so I will take it one match at a time.”
The top seed, along with the national squad of Malaysia is currently busy in a training camp at the University of Bath, which will end on August 4. Chong Wei said, “The training at the University of Bath is important as we can acclimatise to local conditions
and adjust to the time change. This is crucial in getting ready for the event.”
The World Number One Malaysian is the only hope for his country to end their long title draught by winning at the mega event, as no Malaysian shuttler in all categories has ever won the title at the World Championships in the history of this tournament.
Chong Wei’s chances of winning the title in London are quite high, as has been playing incredible badminton in the current year. He has won all events he has participated in 2011, except the Korea Open, where he lost the final match to archrival, Lin Dan
of China, who will also be his major challenger in the upcoming mega event.
