Lee Chong Wei ready to defend the Men’s Singles crown: 2011 Malaysia Open GP Gold
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei is ready to defend the Men’s Singles crown at the 2011 Malaysia Open GP Gold, starting from today on May 4, at Alor Setar, Malaysia. The top seed, Chong Wei, has already clinched four titles this year and is confident to continue
his winning-streak in this event.
This event is of paramount significance as it will be the first qualifying tournament for 2012 London Olympics. Chong Wei will have to beat the ruling World Champion, Chen Jin of China. Another Chinese shuttler, Bao Chunlai will also be there to stop the
winning-run of the Malaysian.
Chong Wei is the best in business as he is continuously winning tournaments without taking any break. Rashid Sidek, the National coach for singles, appreciated the hard-work and dedication of the world number one.
“Chong Wei is the best ever Malaysian player. Even during my time, it was quite impossible to go on winning for several months. He is truly very focused,” the coach said.
Rashid further added “At this GP Gold, I see only Chen Jin and Chunlai as the players who can give him a good run. Chong Wei should get past the others easily.”
The coach is very optimistic for Chong Wei in this home event. In absence of Lin Dan of China, the Malaysian hero is one of the favourites for the title in front of his home crowd. This event's win will also give him ranking points for the 2012 London Olympic
Games.
In the opening round of the event, Chong Wei will be up against Robin Gonansa from Singapore. If the statistics work out accordingly, the top seed will be fighting against Chen Jin, in the semi-final of the event.
The world number one has a superb record against Chen as he is leading with a great margin of 7-2 in the previous nine meetings. On the other hand, Bao Chunlai is expected to reach in the final from the bottom half of the draw as there will be no major contender
to stop his way.
