Lee Chong Wei needs to work on mental toughness, says motivational expert Lawrence Chan Kum Peng

Malaysia’s famous motivational expert, Lawrence Chan Kum Peng, said that the top seed of the country, Lee Chong Wei needs to work on mental toughness if he wants to get success in the major events like World Championships and Olympic Games.
Chan Kum said that this is the right time of working on this aspect, especially when Chong Wei is morally down his defeat from the hands of China’s Lin Dan in the Men’s Singles final of the BWF World Championships 2011.
After working extremely hard in training for years, Chong Wei lifted his level to match the speed and skill of Lin Dan but what a stroke of luck as he could not just finish the final point and had to pay the price in the form of title.
Chong Wei was completely heartbroken after the defeat and took almost two months to recover from that bad condition. Kum Peng said that the shuttler needs to become mentally tough, which will make him confident to perform well in the most crucial situation
in the major tournaments.
Chan Kum said, “Most Malaysian sportsmen are mentally strong but still lack the winning edge or mental toughness when it comes to big matches.”
He further added, “Chong Wei was a strong player but that was not good enough because he was not mentally tough compared to his nemesis, Lin Dan of China. That was why, despite the good performance put up by Chong Wei, he still lost to Lin Dan at the crucial
moment. This is what we call lack of mental toughness.”
The motivational specialist insisted that Chong Wei must learn the art of mental toughness which will raise his level of play and he will have better chances of winning the gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics, which is less than a year away from now.
Now the only difference left between Chong Wei and Lin Dan is the metal strength as both are equal in skill and physical conditions required for a top badminton player. The Malaysian has lifted up his standard of game and levelled up with the Chinese. Now
he needs to work hard to get that confidence, which is required to become the true champion.
