Lee Chong Wei quits Thomas Cup Finals after ankle injury – Badminton Update
Malaysia’s stake in the Thomas Cup Finals have come in danger as its prime shuttler Lee Chong Wei bid adieu to the event after hurting his ankle in a crucial match against Denmark on May 22, 2012.
World Number one Chong Wei was playing against veteran Dane Peter Hoeg Gade when he landed on his ankle with full body weight and hurt it so badly that he had to limp off the court.
Singles head coach of Malaysia Rashid Sidek confirmed that the badminton king will not be gracing the tournament as they are sending him back home where a medical team will examine his injury to suggest a proper treatment.
Rashid said, "His ankle is so swollen. He may have to get it scanned and see the depth of the injury. We have decided that he would not play in the Thomas Cup Finals."
The Malaysian ace is certainly going through a bad patch as sorrows are not coming in single spies but in battalions.
First, he had to concede a walk over against Chinese nemesis Lin Dan in title match of All-England owing to a shoulder injury. He faced a woeful defeat in his comeback event India Open and later he fell prey to flu and fever just before the Thomas Cup Finals.
Now this ankle injury is latest addition in long list of problems.
Chong Wei was supposed to lead from the front in prestigious team event which was last major tournament before the mega London Olympics but the ill-fated maestro could not hit the mark and this injury put his expedition to halt.
National coach Rashid Sidek told that Chong Wei could not hold his tears as this unfortunate incident may jeopardise his participation in London Games.
He said, "He was crying and was so emotional. He must have been thinking about the Olympic Games too. For now, all he needs is some rest and time to regain his confidence."
Meanwhile, the Singles coach Tey Seu Bock also briefed that it is not a fracture according to initial reports and Chong Wei will be back in action within three or four weeks.
Later, Malaysia lost 2-3 to Denmark and undoubtedly Chong Wei’s injury was the only difference as other Singles campaigner Daren Liew and Hafiz Hashim won their matches against Jan O Jorgensen and Hans Kristian Vittinghus respectively.
