Lee Chong Wei registers easy win over Wang Zhengming in round-of-16: Japan Open Super Series
Malaysia’s ace shuttler, Lee Chong Wei proved his high-class skills as he registered an easy win over former World Junior Champion, Wang Zhengming of China in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 at the 2011 Japan Open Super Series, in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday,
September 22.
Chong Wei, who is the ruling World Number One and top seed in the Men’s Singles category of Japan Open, played remarkable badminton and won the match in straight games without any considerable resistance from his opponent.
The opening half of the first set was a close fight between both shuttlers as the score remained tight. Until the break, the Malaysian was just ahead of Zhengming at 11-10. After a break in the opening game, the top seed continued his impressive play against
the Chinese who was also playing impressive badminton.
In the concluding phase, Chong Wei became incredibly fast and struck the bird hard from both corners of the rear court along with perfect net strokes. He clinched the first game with a narrow difference of 21-19.
In the following set, Chong Wei was everywhere in the court and left no room for his Chinese rival to score points. Zhengming tried to change his tactics many times in the second game, but his challenger was quicker in judging the variations.
Chong Wei captured the second game without a tough fight as he finished it by a 21-14 score on the board. The final score of this straight-set pre-quarter-final battle was 21-19 and 21-14.
After the match, coach Tay Seu Bock said, “Chong Wei took some time to beat Zhengming in the opening game because of his own mistakes. He shrugged off the jittery start and managed to get back to his normal game to win easily.”
The coach also warned the top Malaysian shuttler to be careful while playing against Japan’s Kenichi Tago in the quarter-final contest. Bock added, “It will be a tricky match today. Tago has potential and he will also have great followers in his own backyard.
Chong Wei will win if he sticks to his game plan and stay focused throughout the game.”
The quarter-final encounter will be held on Friday, September 23.
