Lee Chong Wei remains gritty to win his matches for boosting the confidence of national team
Malaysia’s top seed and captain of national team, Lee Chong Wei is determined to win all of his Men’s Singles matches and boost the confidence of other shuttlers by providing a good start in the Thomas Cup Qualifying Round, which will start from February 14, in Macau.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei, who is World Number One in Men’s Singles category has been playing flawless badminton and has recently won two major titles in a row. He is confident to give his best in order to reduce burden on other shuttlers. The top seed wants to inspire the weak Malaysian team by delivering an expected performance in the opening fight.
He wants to win all of his matches which will help the back-up players to get inspiration and deliver their best without taking any pressure.
Malaysian squad for Thomas Cup qualifying matches will be comprised on Chong Wei, Koo Kien Keat, Tan Boon Heong, Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, Goh V Shem, Lim Khim Wah, Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Teo Kok Siang, Hoon Thien How and Daren Liew.
Chong Wei also appreciated the effort that national shuttlers made in the two-week centralised training camp at Juara Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
The national squad will leave for Macau today for participating in the qualifying round matches of Thomas Cup Finals.
The World Number One said, “The team’s preparations have been great. There are body aches here and there but that is normal as we have pushed ourselves hard. Both the singles and doubles players have trained daily from 7.30am. The morale and team spirit are high.”
He further added, “As captain, it is my duty to boost the team’s confidence. We don’t want to think too much about winning or losing. We just want to give it our best shot. Yes, we don’t have a strong team but I have urged all the players to put that in the back of their minds.”
Chong Wei also expressed that everyone in the team is ready to prove his worth in this team-event tournament, which is a healthy sign and will play a major role in achieving better results for Malaysia.
In the group matches, Malaysian players will first face Hong Kong team and afterwards, they will take on the second seeded South Korean squad.
