Lee Chong Wei shows sadness over death of former great Malaysian shuttler Punch Gunalan
Malaysia’s Men’s Singles top player and World Number Two Lee Chong Wei expressed his grief over the death of former great shuttler Punch Gunalan and also said that his loss will be missed badly as his contribution for the promotion of badminton is unforgettable.
Chong Wei expressed that Gunalan was a major contributor in the badminton arena in Malaysia as he has been putting in extra efforts to take the sport into the next level.
Gunalan was a part of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) when Chong Wei joined the BAM academy back in 1999.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei further expressed that Gunalan had a communication with players and always used to work for their welfare in every possible manner.
The London Olympic Silver medallist Chong Wei expressed that he heard about the severe illness of Gunalan in London and wanted to meet him after returning home.
But unfortunately could not make it possible because of his tough routine after returning from London.
He stated, “I heard he was seriously ill when I was in London for the Olympics. I wanted to visit him as soon as I got back but I couldn’t break free from my heavy schedule.”
He further added, “I remembered him because he took great interest in the welfare of the players. He always made an effort to talk to the player. He was a respected figure in the world federation but he continued to take care of the athletes’ interest.”
Chong Wei also said that he heard about Gunalan, despite being severely ill, cheered for him when he was playing in London Olympics.
The top Malaysian shuttler remembered his last meeting with Gunalan back in Malaysia Open that took place in January, 2012. He said that Gunalan encouraged him to keep on fighting.
Chong Wei also expressed his gratitude for Gunalan for his impressive services for the country and also called him a great man.
Gunalan was All England Champion in Men’s Doubles category in 1970’s and also worked for the promotion of badminton by joining BAM.
Many other shuttlers in the national team also paid their tribute to Gunalan for his unforgettable contribution for Malaysian badminton.
