Lee Chong Wei starts Olympic year in a scintillating fashion – Badminton news
Lee Chong Wei, the World Number One shuttler from Malaysia, starts the year in a scintillating fashion as he has won the Men’s Singles title at the Korea Open Premier Super Series 2012, which ended on Sunday, January 8, in South Korea.
In the title match, Chong Wei got better of his nemesis and arch rival, Lin Dan of China, who was the defending champion in this tournament. The Malaysian took a sweet revenge of his defeat from the hands of the Chinese shuttler in the last edition of this
tournament.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei has been struggling hard to find a good flow since his loss in the final of the 2011 World Championships, held in London in August, 2011. He remained trailing for the last four months and lost several matches in different events
to Lin and Chen Long.
However, in the opening week of New Year, the Malaysian has left his disappointment behind as he has made his mark over Lin in the final showdown of Korea Open and claimed the title in an impressive way.
Chong Wei finished up the three-set final contest with a 12-21, 21-18 and 21-14 margin on the score board.
The 29-year-old Malaysian, who is US$75,000 richer, indicated that he is determined to continue his domination in the arena of badminton in this Olympic year. He seems to be ready for winning gold medal in the 2012 Olympic Games and for that purpose, a victory
in the Korea Open is a perfect start.
Chong Wei said, “It is a new year and I wanted a fresh start. It is great to start the Olympic year with a title by beating my close rival Lin Dan. This is a positive sign for me ahead of the Olympic Games.”
He further added, “The win is a confidence booster for me. It was a physically draining match but it was really worth it. This is a great start for me and from now it is important that I keep the momentum going and stay injury-free.”
Now, Chong Wei is ready to cross sword against the top shuttlers of the world in the upcoming Malaysia Open Super Series, starting from January 10 in Malaysia.
