Lee Chong Wei still stands a chance to win gold medal in London Olympics, says Sports Minister
Malaysia’s Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said that despite having an injury Lee Chong Wei still stands a strong chance to Men’s Singles win gold medal at London Olympics 2012 which will start in the ending week of July in England.
Ahmad Shabery said that Chong Wei injury is not that serious and will be healed soon and the shuttler will be back to the court for his Olympic preparations.
Chong Wei, who has been remained consistent at World Number One position for the last four years, got an ankle injury while playing against Denmark’s Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark at the last week’s Thomas Cup Finals 2012 in China.
He had to leave court for hospital as it was causing his severe pain. However, it was revealed that he got a minor injury in his ankle.
But getting an injury at such a crucial time when Olympic Games are just less than two months away can seriously affect the confidence of the shuttler.
However, Ahmad Shabery is very optimistic that Chong Wei will be back on track before Olympics considering that the injury is not that serious and will not take more than four weeks to heal.
He also expressed that the World Number One will be back on training soon as he is a fighter and is mentally very strong.
He said, "Chong Wei's injury is not serious and he will give us the opportunity to win a gold medal in the Olympics.”
The Sports Minister further added, "Luckily the injury occurred early in the Thomas Cup because injury at the later stage would have taken a longer time to heal instead of the expected four weeks."
Chong Wei has been playing top class badminton and has won many titles at international level by beating the top shuttlers of the world for the last four years.
His determination and hunger for winning World Championships and Olympic Games kept him putting extra effort in training sessions.
However, the current injury has brought doubts on his performance as many think that he will not be able to produce his top form in Olympic Games but Ahmad Shabery is hopeful that Chong Wei will be at his best before the commencement of mega event.
