Lee Chong Wei stretches his incredible winning streak: 2011 Malaysia Open GP Gold
The ruling world number one, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, has stretched his winning streak by grabbing the Men’s Singles title in the 2011 Malaysia Open GP Gold. The top seed thrashed Bao Chunlai of China, in the final of the championship, at Sultan Abdul
Halim Stadium in Malaysia, on Sunday, May 8.
The world’s best athlete, Chong Wei, delivered a superb performance against the tall Chinese who remained impressive in the whole tournament. It was a straight set final showdown, in which the Malaysian warned the top Chinese athletes that he is ready to
win the mega event of World Badminton Championship, which will held in August, at London, England.
At Alor Setar, yesterday, Chong Wei played flawless game in the opening set, where he crushed Chunlai with a wonderful margin of 21-9. The Chinese could not handle the powerful smashes of the Malaysian and lost the set without putting strong resistance.
However, in the second game, Chunlai played superb badminton in the entire set. He was leading the set at 19-17, where the Malaysian played smart game and scored four consecutive points and won the set by 21-19 margin.
After winning the title, Chong Wei Said, “I used to be ridiculed as a player for holding the world No. 1 ranking without any major titles. Now, I keep on winning. It is a big achievement for me.”
He further added that, “And I am not going to stop at this. I want to keep up with this momentum until after the Olympic Games in London next year.”
The world number one expressed that it becomes quite difficult to maintain the highest level of the game when a shuttler plays in back-to-back. But he is happy with his performance as he clinched two titles in two weeks. He won the Men’s Singles title in
the last week’s India Open Super Series, and yesterday’s Malaysia Open GP Gold.
The Malaysian hero will take rest fro few days. After returning back into the court, he will prepare for the upcoming Sudirman Cup, a mixed team championship, starting from May 22, in China.
