Lee Chong Wei to appear in his last domestic event at National Grand Prix Finals – Badminton news
Malaysian fans will watch their local hero and World Number One Lee Chong Wei in action for the last time in a domestic event, as the shuttler have announced that the upcoming National Grand Prix Finals will be his last local tournament.
All national shuttlers will compete in this event which will kick off from tomorrow on October 12, at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara, Malaysia.
The 28-year-old Chong Wei has decided to leave the domestic events to focus on the major international events as it becomes hectic to participate in both. So, the National GP Finals will be his last domestic tournament and if he wins, he will be the only
shuttler in the country to clinch the 10 successive titles in this national event.
Chong Wei said, “It is not easy to juggle my time between the local and international tournaments. The schedule can be hectic sometimes. To me, both are important but the time has come for me to let go of one. London Olympic Games is my priority tournament
next year. I have decided not to play in any local tournaments next year.”
He further added, “This will be my last local tournament and I am looking forward to winning my 10th national title. But 10 is enough for me.”
Chong Wei has been the winner of this event since 2002 and will be defending his 10th title in a row. He is the favourite to win the event as other shuttlers in Men’s Singles’ category are years behind him in all aspects of the game.
The top seed enjoys a huge fan following in Malaysia and badminton followers love to watch him in action live in front of their eyes. However, these fans will be watching him for the last time in a local event.
At the national event, Chong Wei is placed in Group A along with Chong Yee Han, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, and Lok Chong Chieh. In the semi-final of the event, the top seed will take on the winner of Group C in which Yeoh Kay Bin, Misbun Ramdan Misbun
and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif will be fighting for glory.
