Lee Chong Wei to join Guangzhou training camp after few days – Badminton Update
There is little delay in Malaysian maestro Lee Chong Wei’s participation in national training camp for Thomas Cup as he is suffering from a fever and will join his team in Guangzhou on Tuesday, May 15.
National squad left for China on Sunday, May 13 for a joint practice session before the commencement of prestigious team event.
However, the skipper Chong Wei decided to stay back and restore his energy after having double trouble of flu and fever.
National Singles chief coach Rashid Sidek confirmed that the badminton ace will not sweat in central training camp due to weakness but the coach also told that Chong Wei will continue light training under Tey Seu Bock in Kuala Lumpur.
He said, "Chong Wei has been unwell over the last few days and has not fully recovered. He will not join the rest of the squad when we leave for Guangzhou. He will rest and will also have training under the supervision of Seu Bock."
The Malaysian team will have a four-day camp in Guangzhou to boost their team spirit but now the absence of the badminton king will really affect their efforts.
However, Rashid thinks it will not have any effect on Chong Wei himself as he has plenty of experience to make amends.
He said, "It is only a four-day stint in Guangzhou and Chong Wei will not be affected much although he will join us late. He is experienced and should get adapted quickly."
Meanwhile, World Number one shuttler also briefed the media about his ailment. He told that he was not completely fit to start his regular training so he decided to stay back in Kuala Lumpur and rest to avoid over exertion.
Chong Wei said, "I feel weak and have not been able to train and I felt that staying back and resting in Kuala Lumpur was the best option."
Malaysia is not bothered with his absence until opening match against South Africa but they need Chong Wei at his best against Denmark on May 22.
Apart from Chong Wei, the Malaysian squad comprises Hafiz Hashim and Daren Liew along with Men’s Doubles teams like Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah.
