Lee Chong Wei to meet Chen Jin in Men’s Singles semi-final at the 2011 World Championships
Malaysia’s most successful Men’s Singles shuttler, Lee Chong Wei is all set to meet the defending champion, Chen Jin of China in the Men’s Singles semi-final of the 2011 World Championships.
World Number One, Chong Wei thrashed Kevin Cordon of Guatemala, whereas, Chen Jin tamed Hans Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark in straight games in the Men’s Singles quarter-final.
Chong Wei delivered a stunning performance by playing flawless badminton against Cordon and emerged as the winner without facing any resistance from his opponent by a margin of 21-7 and 21-13.
In the opening game of the match, Chong Wei was everywhere in the court leaving no room for Cordon to place even his best strokes. He was playing with wonderful ease as he found no problem from his challenger at any point of the opening set and finished
it with the margin of 21-7.
However, in the following game, Cordon showed that there is some fight in him as he matched the speed of his rival and reached at 9-8. At this stage, the top seed accelerated the pace of the game and took control to win the set by a 21-13 margin.
After the match, Chong Wei said, “So far I think I am in top form. But I may retire after the Olympics. It will depend on my fitness and injuries.”
Chong Wei previously defeated Cordon at the 2010 World Championships also, but there is a lot of difference now as the Guatemala shuttler has improved a lot. Chong Wei said, “I don’t even remember having played against him in the world meet last year. He
was insignificant then. This time, there was a lot of focus on him, especially since he beat Chen Long (of China in the first round) and he seems more confident on court.”
Cordon was satisfied with his performance throughout the tournament. He said, “I lost to the best player in the world, and it's difficult to play against him. But this is my best tournament ever and it will help me to aim higher.”
Now, Chong Wei will meet the ruling World Champion, Chen Jin of China in the semi-final, which will be played today at Wembley Arena in London, England.
