Lee Chong Wei to stay around for 2014 Asian Games but no more Olympics after London edition
Lee Chong Wei, who is Malaysia’s top shuttler in Men’s Singles category for almost a decade, said that he may continue playing badminton until the next Asian Games and Thomas Cup Finals in 2014 but he will certainly not be around in 2016 Olympic Games.
Chong Wei has been World Number One for the last more than three years and is now slipped down to the World Number Two position after missing last two Super Series events including Indonesia Open Premier Super Series and Singapore Open Super Series.
China’s Lin Dan climbed up to the top position in Men’s Singles world ranking and will enter into the arena in London as World Number One.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei expressed his views and plans for Olympics in a media launchon he hosted at Jwara Stadium.
When asked whether he will play in the 2016 Olympic Games if he remains unable to live up to expectations in the upcoming edition of mega event, Chong Wei promptly turned down this option by saying that London Olympics will be his last and he will not stay around in 2016.
He said, “No, please, no more Olympics. London is my last. I may stay around until the next Asian Games (2014) at the most. There could be one more Thomas Cup Finals and the World Championships. I don’t know whether I can handle it if I get injured again.”
Chong Wei got a severe injury in his right ankle while landing awkwardly in the right corner of rear-court area in last month’s Thomas Cup Finals 2012.
This injury hampered his preparation for Olympics but he has been working hard to recover and is a lot better at the moment but not at his best.
He further stated, “With less than 30 days to go there has been improvement to the ankle but I hope to recover even faster.”
However, Chong Wei is known for his fighting spirit and he is pushing himself to the limit to recover from injury as soon as possible in order to participate in Olympic Games.
The Malaysian hero is recovering fast at the moment and many believe that he will be at his best at the mega event.
