Lee Chong Wei to stop playing after making last appearance in 2013 World Championships
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei, the World Number One shuttler in Men’s Singles category, intends to take retirement next year after making his last appearance at the 2013 World Championships.
The top seed in the world feels that he can win his first ever title in the World Championships and for that purpose he decided to give a last shot in the next edition of this mega event.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei is also proceeding in the right direction to win a gold medal in Olympic Games, which is his ultimate target in the current year.
He is also gunning for a third consecutive Men’s Singles title at the All England Open Premier Super Series, which is in progress at Birmingham, England.
In the last year’s World Championships, Chong Wei failed to take the winning point in the final contest against China’s Lin Dan and lost the match as the Chinese came from behind and nailed the title.
Chong Wei said, "Last year was my best chance to win the World Championship and I was holding match point against Lin Dan. It was disappointing to lose that way and I needed a few months to recover and this was the period that I was losing to China shuttlers.”
He further added, "I want to have one more shot at the World Championships next year before retiring."
However, the Malaysian does not want to dwell in the past anymore as he has got rid of that disappointing situation and is determined to put up superb show in the 2012 London Olympics.
He wants to compete in the 2013 World Championships to give a last try for winning Malaysia’s first ever title as no Malaysian has ever won the crown in this mega event.
Currently, Chong Wei is busy in a bid to win his third consecutive Men’s Singles title at All England Open.
He secured his place in the semi-final of the tournament by defeating his younger opponent Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia in the quarter-final clash on Friday, March 9, in Birmingham.
In the semi-final showdown, Chong Wei will meet Lee Hyun Il of Korea and is expected to meet Lin Dan in the title match.
