Lee Chong Wei topples Kevin Cordon in Men’s Singles quarter-final of the 2011 World Championships
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei continued his smooth run in the Men’s Singles draw as he crushed Kevin Cordon of Guatemala’s in the quarter-final of the 2011 World Championships, at the Wembley Indoor Arena in London, England, on Friday, August 12.
Chong Wei, who is enjoying the World Number One spot in the Men’s Singles world rankings, proved that he belongs to a different class which is quite hard to achieve by even the top shuttlers of the world. He showed no mercy to Cordon, who defeated the fifth
seed, Chen Long of China in the opening round of the event. Chong Wei won the match in straight sets with the margin of 217 and 21-13.
The top seed Malaysian opened his campaign against Cordon in his usual quick manner. He has got the highest skills in the game and he is also adept in making good use of his skills with accordance to the situation. Chong Wei completely controlled the pace
of the rallies and played at his highest pace.
The Malaysian spared no chance for Cordon to make comeback in the opening set of the match by playing badminton of the highest class. The perfect play of Chong Wei earned him the opening set with a wonderful ease by a stunning margin of 21-7.
In the second set, Cordon played a little better game by matching the speed of his opponent in the initial points. However, Chong Wei injected more pace into his strokes and started to build a lead. The top seed was playing with precision and his deceptive
strokes left no room for Cordon to put up any sort of strong resistance.
Chong Wei finished-off the second set with the margin of 21-13. This Men’s Singles quarter-final fight ended in straight games with the victory of Chong Wei, who finished it with the score of 21-7 and 21-13.
After winning the match, Chong Wei said, “I think I have been on top form, and it was good that I could win like this because a key to winning the world championships is keeping my energy.”
Chong Wei will take on China’s Chen Jin in the semi-final of the World Championships. The Chinese is the defending champion in this event and is determined to defend his title.
