Lee Chong Wei wants team spirit from his compatriots at the Thomas Cup Finals – Badminton news
Malaysia’s Men’s Singles ace shuttler Lee Chong Wei wants his compatriots in the national squad to put up team spirit in order to perform well in the Thomas Cup Finals 2012, which will kick off from May 20-27 in China.
Thomas Cup is the most prestigious tournament in the team-event category and the top nations in the world compete in this championship to earn glory.
Chong Wei, currently World Number One, knows that the current national squad will be the weakest squad for Thomas Cup in the e entire history of Malaysia and he wants all players to deliver their best while remaining united.
Malaysian shuttlers will be underdogs in Thomas Cup as they will be up against the badminton power houses like China, Korea, Indonesia, Denmark and Japan.
However, Chong Wei is optimistic that the team-spirit among Malaysian squad will play a crucial role in getting good results in the Thomas Cup, which is the biggest men’s team-event championship in the world of badminton.
Chong Wei said, "Everyone must build their spirits up as it is the most important step towards doing well in a team event. A team-building camp is planned for us and I hope it will help the players bond."
The World Number 1 will be joined by Muhammad Hafiz Hashim and Daren Liew in the Men’s Singles category.
While talking about the World Number 28 Daren’s recent performances, Chong Wei said that the shuttler has improved a lot and will play an important role in the Thomas Cup.
Chong Wei added, "Liew Daren has improved a lot and will add stability to the team. He, however, needs more experience to stamp his mark."
However, the reality is that there is no depth in Malaysia’s current national squad and the shuttlers do not stand a strong chance to win prestige.
However, Chong Wei believes that if the shuttlers show a good team-spirit, then the results can be desirable in this prestigious team tournament.
Chong Wei, who has recently recovered from a shoulder injury, is looking forward to support his team in every possible manner in order to produce better results in the Thomas Cup.
