Lee Chong Wei wants the Badminton Association of Malaysia to organise league tournament in Malaysia
The world number one shuttler, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia suggested to the Badminton Association of Malaysia to organise a professional badminton league in Malaysia for the purpose of improving the standard of the game in the country. Indonesia and China
has already introduced badminton leagues in which clubs from different areas of the country participate.
"Malaysia should have a professional badminton league. It will not only promote the game but also help our national players get regular quality matches," said Chong Wei. "Of course, the league can only be successful if there are sponsors. It will be great,
once it happens, as our locals can gain from playing against foreign shuttlers."
In the proceeding year, the world number one participated in two professional leagues in Indonesia and China. Chong Wei played in Taufik Hidayat’s SGS Bandung club in the Djarum Superliga Indonesia. He also participated in the China Badminton Super League
and played two matches and played a key role in the victory of Guangzhou Yueyu Club.
China became the first country in Asia that introduced the league system in Badminton by realising that the participation of international players will enhance the experience of the young Chinese shuttlers and they will be able to compete at the highest
level of the game.
The participation of world-class players in the club leagues makes the competition very tough and it also helps the youngsters of the country to improve their standard by playing against these players.
Club competitions are frequently organised in Europe which help the players in winning titles at the Olympics and the World Championships. The renowned leagues in Europe are the Danish Badminton league and the German Badminton league.
There is a huge gap between Chong Wei and the rest of the Malaysian players in the men’s singles category. Apart from the top seed, no other Malaysian comes in the top 15 players of the world rankings. Chong Wei suggests that the club league will improve
the standard of the game in Malaysia and consequently the country will have better players to compete at the international level.
