Lee Chong Wei will participate in Axiata Cup but not before semi-final – Badminton news
Malaysia’s top badminton player Lee Chong Wei will participate in the Axiata Cup but not before the semi-final stage as he is undergoing a treatment of his should injury.
The World Number One Chong Wei received this injury in the title match of All England Open Premier Super Series 2012 in Birmingham, two weeks ago.
He had to stop playing in the second set of final showdown because his shoulder injury started to aggravate.
He decided to quit from playing against his opponent Lin Dan of China and flew back to home for getting proper treatment.
Nevertheless, the injury is not that threatening as he can swing his arm without feeling much pain at the moment.
But he does not want to take any sort of risk as he is the favourite to win a gold medal in Olympic Games, which is just four months away.
Chong Wei was expected to participate in the opening matches of Axiata Cup, which is the richest tournament in the team-event category.
However, he is not feeling hundred percent good at the moment and will play in the semi-final.
Yesterday, Chong Wei entered in the court after a gap of more than a week. In this whole week, he has been doing light work including jogging and a few other physical exercises.
He said, “I jogged and did some light training. This is my first day back on court since my return. The pain is still there but it isn’t as bad as before and I’m able to swing the racquet as long as I don’t overexert myself. I should make a full recovery
soon. I’m just waiting for the doctor’s and the National Sports Institute’s (NSI) report.”
He added, “Although I’m recovering well, I think it is too soon to compete in the Axiata Cup on Saturday. Hopefully, the reports are positive and I’ll be back in time for the semi-finals.”
Chong Wei is expected to get his rhythm back and will start his usual training in a few days. However, his fans will be happy to see him in action again in the semi-final of Axiata Cup.
