Lee Chong Wei worries about the lack of competency in Men’s Singles shuttlers of Malaysia
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei qualms over the fact that the country is facing a dearth of competent shuttlers to raise the Malaysian flag at international level. If things proceed in the same manner, Malaysia will not have a strong future in this sport.
The World Number One, Chong Wei wants the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to produce and groom young talent to remain in the top nations of the world in this particular game. Other countries are working hard on their young shuttlers especially China,
where countless players have the talent and opportunities to become world beaters.
Chong Wei wants BAM to send back-up shuttlers in the Grand Prix events, which will help them in gaining experience by playing against top shuttlers and will also assist them in learning the required skills to become a world-class player. Their better performance
in the Grand Prix events will give them precious ranking points and then, they will be able to compete in Super Series tournaments.
Chong Wei said, “I am used to training with what we have in our national team at the moment but we cannot keep lamenting the lack of sparring partners or talk about the wealth of talent China has. It has remained that way for a long time now.”
He further added, “I am also not competing in too many tournaments and what we have are a bunch of young players who have yet to make a breakthrough. BAM should be exposing them to international events like the Vietnam and Taiwan Opens which will be held
soon and continue sending them for more.”
Malaysia has some talented shuttlers who can perform well at the international level, if they work hard in the right direction. Malaysia’s best hope is Zulfadli Zulkifli, who is just 18-years-of-age and has the talent to become a world-class shuttler in
near future.
Among back-up shuttlers who have been training with Chong Wei for the last couple of years, Chong Wei Feng, Liew Daren and Chan Kwong Beng should now perform well at the world stage, as they have got decent experience from international events.
