Lee Chong Wei’s begins with shaky start in first round of the
Korea Open Premier Super Series 2011
The reigning World Number One and winner of the PROTON Malaysia Open Super Series 2011, Lee Chong Wei, was put under a severe test by the World Number Ten, Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen, in the first round match of the Korea Open Premier Super
Series 2011.
The opening match was a three-set battle and the top seed, Chong Wei of Malaysia, won this contest against the impressive Danish shuttler.
Chong Wei, who is the defending champion in the Korea Open Premier Super Series 2011, struggled in his first round battle against Jan O Jorgensen, who is the number two ranked player in Denmark.
In the opening set of the match, it was the Malaysian who dominated the game completely giving no room to his opponent to comeback in the game and won the first set by a big margin of 21-9.
It was a different story in the second set, as the Dane fought back and showed his fighting spirit and tactical play. The Dane was just incredible as he matched Chong Wei toe-to-toe and stroke-for-stroke. Jan O Jorgensen gave all the answers to the tactics
of the top seed and grabbed the second set with a score of 21-18.
The champion of the PROTON Malaysia Open Super Series 2011 did not lose even a single game to anybody this year, until O Jorgensen stunned him by winning the second game of his first match in the Korea Open Premier Super Series 2011. Annoyed by the loss
of the second game, Lee Chong Wei, put everything in his possession in the final set.
The best player in the world and one of the strong favourites in the current Premier Super Series event worked very hard against O Jorgensen, who emerged victorious in the home title Denmark Super Series 2010.
The impressive Malaysian employed all of his techniques and tactics for which he is known and won the third and final set of the match by a score of 21-16. It was his experience in the end that made the World Number One victorious in the opening battle of
the Korea Open Premier Super Series 2011.
The World Number One was the favourite for this match and such a close fight was not expected from the Danish player by anyone. Lee Chong Wei is in tremendous form and has won two major events in the first month of 2011, indicating that he is playing at
his best.
On the other hand, he was forced to go on the back foot by the passionate 23-year-old, Jan O Jorgensen from Denmark, in this crunchy match of the first round.
Danish players feel quite comfortable in the freezing atmosphere of Seoul, South Korea because they are used to these kind of playing conditions. On the contrary, it becomes very unusual for the Malaysian player, who has recently played in his home ground
which is famous for being humid.
In badminton, the court’s temperature plays a key role in the final outcome of the match. However, the defending champion is completely capable of doing well in unfamiliar conditions and hopefully he will do better in his upcoming match against the local
hero, Park Sung-Hwan, in the second round.
