Lee Churcher knocks Barrie Jones out to win the BBBC Welsh Area light middleweight title - Boxing News
Lee Churcher not only grabbed an impressive technical knockout win over his fellow countryman Barrie Jones, the former BBBC Welsh Area light middleweight champion, but also engraved his name over his career’s very first title that is the BBBC Welsh Area
light middleweight title.
The 10-round bout was held on May 19, 2012 and the ring for the pay-per-view was set up at Newport Leisure Centre situated in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom. The above championship bout headlined the event whereas the non-title four-round bout between Justyn
Hugh and Steffan Hughes co-headlined the Saturday night showdown.
Lee, 31, was entering in his career’s 14th bout. The orthodox Newport pugilist has nailed nine opponents and two of them via knockout. He has lost just three bouts and was on a three-bout win streak since his last controversial loss to Costas Osben.
This was the surging middleweight’s second title bout and he was all set to stun the young Barrie Jones. Jones, 27, was entering in his career’s 29th bout and is currently going through a considerably tough phase of his career.
The young lad has won 19 bouts and has nailed seven of his opponents by sheer knockout. Despite the fact that Jones possessed an upper hand in experience, Lee was the one who set the pace of the bout and made Barrie run in circles in the ring.
In addition, Barrie was coming from a somewhat important win over heavily experienced Andrew Patterson but one thing should be kept in mind. The southpaw Jones was on a three-bout streak which he successfully constructed after breaking a continuous streak
of six losses.
Therefore, in a nutshell, Jones was not that much of a threat to Lee and during the bout this fact was evident since Barrie hardly created any problems for the orthodox Churcher.
During the first eight rounds, both pugilists adopted a defensive stance and did not strive hard to knock the other one out. It was Lee who decided to move in and try for the knockout drive.
His attempt was successful and Lee knocked the fatigued Barrie out in the eighth round. After the impressive win, Lee stated, “Words can’t describe how I feel. I’m speechless and that’s not like me. The amount of hard work I’ve put into this is unbelievable
but having this belt round my waist makes it all worthwhile.”
With this win Churcher has collected his 10th career and third KO win whereas Jones has added yet another loss to his resume, 10th to be specific.
