Danny Lee shares lead in the 1st round of AT & T Pebble Beach National Pro Am
Kiwi Danny Lee shot a 9-under 63 to finish tied for the 1st in the first round of the AT & T Pebble Beach National Pro Am.
The 21-year-old Lee, who is currently the best player in New Zealand, stunned the spectators at Pebble Beach, on Thursday, by sharing the lead with Dustin Johnson and Charlie Wi of South Korea.
Lee’s performance was outstanding, as he recorded 5 birdies and 2 eagles. He set foot on the course with a modest wind sweeping through.
Right from the start, Lee held his nerve and birdied the 1st hole.
He grabbed the spectators’ attention on the second hole by scoring an eagle and parred the next two holes.
On the difficult par-3 5th, Lee made the most of his putting skills, reeling off his 2nd birdie of the round.
On the front nine, his score was 31. Lee knew that the only way to gain a considerable lead was to avoid making bogeys.
The bogey-free round helped him strengthen his position on the leaderboard. He scored 32 on the back nine to cap off round 1 in an impressive style.
Thrilled by his good performance in the prestigious event, the Kiwi star stated that he knew he could maintain a big lead if he avoided making sloppy putts.
Nine-under 63 at Pebble Beach was Lee’s highest score by far.
Lee commented that he played in a comfortable environment and had several opportunities to make good shots. "I actually had some good breaks today," the Korean-born Lee said.
"I made two eagles, I holed out from 100 yards away and one I think it was on the second hole, the par 5, I was in the bunker and the pin was in a very tough place to get up and down from actually. I hit the pin as it was the only way to stop the ball and
it went in,” he continued.
Lee said he was satisfied with his game because the new season has just begun. He added that getting off to a good start will keep his momentum going.
However, he said that he was a bit skeptical at times, as his mind was distracted because he was not focusing much on what he was doing.
“It is only February right now. I guess I was too nervous and not focusing on my own game so I just learned a way to play a little bit better than what I was used to over the last four weeks”.
