Lee Haskins beats Stuart Hall to grab the vacant EBU bantamweight title – Boxing News
Lee Haskins, the current EBU (European) bantamweight champion, grabbed an impressive unanimous decision win over fellow countryman Stuart Hall, the former BBBC British bantamweight champion, in a 12-round bout held on July 7, 2012.
The duo co-headlined the pay-per-view, organised and promoted by Mick Hennessy of Hennessy Sports and Jamie Sanigar. The showdown was headlined by the 12-round heavyweight bout between Tyson Fury and Vinny Maddalone for the vacant WBO Intercontinental heavyweight
gold.
The ring for the event was set at the Hand Arena situated in Clevedon, Somerset, United Kingdom. The event was televised live on UK’s national channel ‘Channel 5’.
Lee, 28, entered his career’s 28th bout, boasting 25 wins and just 2 losses. The Bristol proud has pinned 11 of his opponents by knockout and was coming off a lengthy nine-bout win streak since his last loss to Ian Napa.
During all those fights, the southpaw performed extremely well and even grabbed and defended several titles. His Saturday night opponent, Hall, 32, was in his 15th career bout, exhibiting just 12 wins.
Though Stuart has not collided with many pugilists yet he has built himself quite a reputation for being a tough and talented opponent.
During the whole bout, Lee emphatically set the pace, controlled it for the rest of the bout and eventually dominated the ring. Stuart strived hard to connect some damaging strikes but Lee’s superior and somewhat invincible defence did not allow him to do
so.
Also known as ‘Playboy’, Lee used his short height and southpaw stance to connect well-placed jabs by using the inside out strategy. At the end of the day, Lee rose at the occasion and engraved his name on the vacant EBU (European) bantamweight gold by collecting
118-109, 117-111, and 118-110 scores.
After the bout, Lee, while regarding the performance as his career’s best, stated, “I thought I boxed perfectly to plan. I thought I showed maturity, skill, cleverness and patience; we're up and coming now. It means everything to me. It's like a world title
to me and I'm so glad to have it after all the hard work I've put in to training.”
With this win, Lee collected his 26th career victory whereas Stuart has received his second career loss.
