Lee Janzen takes a good start at the United Leasing Championship
Lee Janzen carded a five-under par 67 in the opening round of the United Leasing Championship, at the Victoria National Golf Club, in Newburgh, to share the second spot on Thursday, June 28, 2012.
Janzen got off to a slow start and sank two birdies against the same number of bogeys on the front nine to remain at even par.
The back nine of the course saw him pick some pace, as he managed to score five birdies that helped him settle a stroke behind the leader Omar Uresti.
Like many other players, he seemed to be concentrating on accuracy throughout the day and succeeded in hitting 12 of the 14 fairways.
Moreover, he missed only three greens-in-regulation on a hot sunny day. It was overall an amazing display of the skills considering the tough conditions of the course.
"I played the course very conservatively off the tee," Janzen said. "There were times I could have hit more club off the tee but I opted to hit less club to make sure I hit the fairway and was content to hit longer clubs into the greens".
"We have very humid days in Florida where you're just soaked," added the Orlando resident. "But it's hot. It's hot enough that it's a factor. It will affect you physically, which could affect your performance and your ability to think. I really tried not
to waste any energy out there".
He now plans to analyze the mistakes that he made on the front nine of the course and is hoping to get a better score in the remaining three rounds.
Martin Piller and David Lingmerth were the other two players who joined him on the leaderboard with a five-under par 67 opening round score each.
Alistair Presnell and Tag Ridings were further a stroke back to share the fifth position on the leaderboard.
Overall, the players faced huge troubles while concentrating on the game because of the 106 degrees temperature recorded on Thursday, the highest for the month of June in Evansville’s history. Previously, the highest temperature for the month was recorded
in 1954 at 104 degrees.
