Lee Meng Yean and Chow Mei Kuan deliver a stunning performance to win the crown in Kuala Lumpur Open 2011
Malaysia’s young pair of Lee Meng Yean – Chow Mei Kuan won their first major women’s doubles title by beating the much senior pair of Sannatasah Saniru – Tee Jing Yi, in the final showdown of the Kuala Lumpur Open 2011, at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday
April 11. Lee Meng – Chow Mei also defeated the top seeds Vivian Hoo - Lim Yin Loo in the semi-final of the tournament.
In the women’s doubles final, Sannatasah – Tee Jing were favourites on paper as they were facing a much younger and inexperienced pair on the other side of the court. In the opening set, the senior shuttlers faced no resistance from the younger opponents,
who made numerous unforced errors throughout the set. Sannatasah – Tee Jing won the first set with a comfortable margin of 21-13.
However, Lee Meng – Chow Mei started to change things by playing an aggressive game. Their speed took the opponents by surprise as the young duo kept the shuttle-c**k very low from the net and managed a good lead of 11-7, in the first part of the second
set. After the one-minute break, Lee Meng – Chow Mei continued their good run and leveled the match by winning the second set 21-14.
In the final set, the young shuttlers put up a wonderful show in front of a cheering crowd as they proved too strong for the opponents. Sannatasah – Tee Jing tried to slow down the speed of the game for better control but failed as the opponents kept the
pace high. Lee Meng – Chow Mei played a flawless game and won the set by a big margin of 21-14. The final score of this thrilling match was, 13-21, 21-14 and 21-14.
Lee Meng – Chow Mei won the Dutch Junior Open 2011, just a month ago in March 2011. In the Kuala Lumpur Open 2011, the duo grabbed their first women’s doubles title in their second appearance in any major event. The victorious pair is hopeful to produce
the same result in the upcoming event of Thailand International Series, starting from April 26, in Thailand.
