Lee Selby pins Patrick Okine to defend Commonwealth featherweight title – Boxing News
Lee Selby, the BBBC British and Commonwealth (British Empire) featherweight champion, stunned his Friday night opponent and did swift work by knocking out Patrick Okine, the WBA Pan African featherweight champion, in the fifth round of the 12-round showdown
held on May 25, 2012.
The duo headlined the epic pay-per-view which was organised and promoted by Frank Warren and the ring for the showdown was set up at Newport Leisure Centre in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom.
The night was co-headlined by the non-title eight-round welterweight bout between Frankie Gavin and Laszlo Komjathi. Despite the fact that both men were entering their career’s 14th bout, Lee had a clear upper hand in almost all the significant aspects of
the sport.
Lee, 25, a surging Briton pugilist, has won 12 of his total bouts and boasts four wins via knockout. In addition, Selby was on an eight-bout win streak since his last career loss to Samir Mouneimne.
His Friday night opponent, Patrick, boasts 11 wins and interestingly has nailed nine of his opponents by knockout. The Ghanaian proud was also on a seven-bout win streak but the most important facet to note was the fact that he has nailed most of those pugilists
who were in their either very first bout or were of rookie level.
Lee, on the other hand, was flying high as he not only collected wins over heavy duty names such as John Simpson, James Ancliff and others but also grabbed two apex British divisional titles.
From the very first round, Lee set the pace of the bout and did not allow the dangerous knockout specialist to connect his powerful jabs. Both men leashed a huge wave of jabs but at the end of the day it was Lee who came out victorious as Okine was unable
to defend himself from the swift and almost invisible jabs of Selby.
The Briton brutally battered Patrick and was leading on all the scorecards in the first four rounds. During the fifth round, Lee capitalised a golden chance and pinned Okine in the corner of the ring.
Lee opened a wave of jabs and continuously pounded Patrick’s body and face. ‘The Mallet’ Patrick strived hard and eventually brought himself out of the corner but not for long as Lee again grabbed and threw him in the corner for the second time.
It was this second barrage that made Patrick numb who got flattened on the ring floor signalling the bout-referee to end the bout. With this win, Lee has not only collected his 13th career and fifth knockout win but has also defended his Commonwealth
title as well. Patrick, on the other hand, has received his career’s second loss and first ever via KO.
