Lee Slattery clinches lead through halfway mark of Bankia Madrid Masters, Spain – Golf news
Englishman Lee Slattery pulled in a round of six-under, 66, on the second day of the Bankia Madrid Masters to edge past rest of the field and lead the event by one shot. A Challenge Tour graduate, Slattery is on the verge of losing his playing status on the tour as he did in 2007, when he lost his card for a mere €77. The 33-year-old Englishman will do everything on this weekend to post a victory to put an end to his playing status struggles once and for all.
Slattery started-off the day carding three birdies before making the turn. He pulled in another on the first hole of the back nine and conceded a lone bogey of the day at par-three, 12th. He closed the round with three more birdies, two of them coming on the last hole, to grab the lead.
He said, “I got off to a good start, I was two under early and just kept it together and had a nice finish, birdied the last two holes. It’s mainly down to putting, I’ve putted well today, and I seemed to hole everything.”
Francesco Molinari, the Italian who clinched an early lead at the start of the day, had a relatively calm back nine where he was able to manage just two birdies to lose the lead. He carded four birdies on the front dropping just one shot at par-three, 5th, to finish second alongside Spaniard Eduardo de La Riva.
He added, “A good solid round, I’m hitting the ball better than I was this summer. Today’s round was trickier than yesterday’s because of the wind.”
World Number One golfer, Luke Donald pulled in a round of two-under, 70, to finish for a joint ninth and could have done better if he had not dropped two shots on the closing holes of the round. Donald is aiming to summit the money lists on the both the tour at the culmination of the season, something which has never been achieved before in the sport.
