Lee Trevino throws his weight behind Tiger Woods – PGA Tour update
Lee Trevino, one of the greatest Mexican-American golfing legends, also threw his weight behind Tiger Woods, giving some out-of-the-box suggestions to the ace golfer who is trying hard to snap out of his bad form. Trevino was speaking at a luncheon arranged
to promote the Byron Nelson Championship.
His comments came out just two days after Jack Nicklaus had spoken in support of Woods. Trevino’s suggestion were of a relatively more aggressive nature than Nicklaus’s, when he cautioned Woods to be wary of all the coaches he has hired and said he would
do well to dump all of them. “My suggestion to Tiger Woods, which I don’t know will ever happen, is he’s got to look at the film from when he started winning all those tournaments and go right back to what he was doing and get rid of all these people,” said
Trevino.
But Trevino is not new to suggest Woods to go back to his early days and revert to the same playing style that made him the most forceful player of the sport. Trevino, though, avoided saying anything when asked if Woods will break Nicklaus’s record of 18
major Championship wins. The 71-year-old veteran was ranked second in McCormack's World Golf Rankings in 1980, behind Tom Watson, and won his sixth major, the PGA Championship at the age of 44.
Trevino went on and stated that once Woods "gets his mindset straight and quits messing with all the instructors", he will surely regain his winning form. “He’ll find his game,” Trevino said. “He’s too good a player. He’s got desire. He hasn’t lost that
yet. He just got off the road a little bit and it’s going to take him a little while to get his head on straight, but he’s Tiger Woods.”
Woods present coach, Sean Foley, has come under scathing criticism in recent times, when many suggest that woods knows a lot more about the game than his coach. Critics claim that he will do nothing more than further deteriorate the golfer’s swing. Woods
is currently working hard to recover from a career slumps. He is without a victory for the last 18 months and is preparing for the next Championship in Miami.
