Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, Luke Donald blame Steve Williams for reckless comments
Although with Steve Williams’ recent retraction with whatever he uttered at the concluding round of WGC Bridgestone invitational last week, the story still seems to linger on endlessly, much to the chagrin of Adam Scott and Williams.
Williams was ecstatic over Scott’s victory at the Firestone Golf Club and went over to state “I have won 145 times and that is the best win of my life”, something which did not go down well with the Tiger Woods camp. Williams later retracted over the statement
saying that he lost his head over the irresponsible comments and blamed the brewing anger inside of him which led him say those words.
It now appears now that not just Woods, many of the top ranking golfers have taken a serious note of what Williams said over the victory. Darren Clarke, winner of this year’s Open Championship, criticized Williams in subdued undertones.
“Steve is an over exuberant sort of guy. I think if that had been my caddie, he might have kept a little bit quieter,” Clarke said.
World number one, Luke Donald, although rarely indulges in controversies, took an exception to say a word or two on the whole episode, also blaming Williams of going overboard and trespassing into wrong territory.
“The thing I found disappointing was that there was no talk about how pleased he was about Adam winning,” Donald said.
Lee Westwood, the heavyweight from England agreed with most of his fellow players and stated, “There’s no relevance to the interview except to have a dig at Tiger Woods.”
But the story doesn’t end here. Tennis star Andy Roddick, who is an avid fan of the sport and closely watches the proceedings of his favourite players, expressed his surprise over Williams remarks and said, “Am I missing something? Was Steve the one actually
playing?' ... the guy was just happy for his new employer! So happy for him that he almost mentioned his name.”
Certainly, the lashing would have not gone down well with Williams, who never would have expected in his wildest dreams that his reckless statement would churn up such heated debate. Scott has been more careful with his comments during all this time and
blamed the media for asking Williams too many questions which led him to the controversial statements.
Woods fired Williams last month without citing reasons, bringing an end to a 12-year-old relationship in a blink of an eye. Many of the critics and old friends of the duo claim that Williams’ decision of switching sides with Scott while Woods was undergoing
rehab from his knee injuries infuriated the champion, yielding into Williams’s termination.
The 14-major-winner won 13 of his major titles while Williams’ was on his bag and much of his success on the course is also credited to Williams’ invaluable suggestions.
