Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell win Round 1: Volvo Matchplay Championship
The Volvo Matchplay Championship is currently taking place at the Finca Cortesin Golf Course in Andalucía, Spain. The top names of golf are taking part in this prestigious event and are really using their best golfing skills to battle their opponent.
In Pool H, the match between Italian player Francesco Molinari and Ian Poulter was halved. Both the players gave an equal performance and hence , that lead to a draw between the players. As for Pool G, Miguel Angel Jimenez defeated South African player Charl
Schwartzel 3 and 2.
It was surely a bad day for the Masters winner, Schwartzel as he didn’t make a single point in the first day of the tournament. Jimenez started off by gaining a point as Schwartzel bogeyed the first. With another bogey by the South African on the second
hole, Jimenez was two-up after two holes. On the fifth hole, Schwartzel made another bogey for Jimenez to be three up. The Spanish player made his first birdie of the day on hole number eight which put him at a four-up lead. With Schwartzel making another
bogey on the eleventh and Jimenez birdying the thirteenth hole, Jimenez emerged as the winner.
Another Spanish player, Alvaro Quiros was triumphant as he defeated Englishman Paul Casey 3 & 1. Rory McIlroy was also victorious in the first round as he beat Retief Goosen by one hole. McIlroy, who recently went through a horrible Masters meltdown, put
up a good fight with Goosen. Both players were all square until the fourteenth hole. On the fifteenth hole, McIlroy made a birdie giving him a one-up lead which he maintained for the remaining three holes of the day.
2010 US Open winner, Graeme McDowell defeated the Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen 3 & 1. The match between McDowell and Oosthuizen was also interesting as both the players were all square after ten holes for the day.
The remaining three matches were all won by the top three golfers in the world. Martin Kaymer, who is ranked number three, defeated Y.E Yang 2 & 1. Luke Donald, who became number two just last week, beat American Ryan Moore 4 & 3. As for the number one golfer,
Lee Westwood, he defeated Anders Hansen 6 & 5.
