Lee Westwood aims to end no-major taboo at BMW PGA Championship
World number one, Lee Westwood is ready to take a chance on victory at the BMW PGA Championship, which is one of the flagship events taking place on the European tour. The event carrying a winner’s share of €750,000 is Westwood’s
chance on ending the taboo according to which, he has never won a major despite having 22 European Tour titles.
The 38-year-old Englishman, Westwood spoke to the press after attending the practice session held at the Wentworth on Wednesday. He said that he was mentally prepared for lifting another trophy in the current season and this time,
he was being supported by his decent run of form.
While speaking to reporters at the press conference, Westwood said, “It was nice to get a couple of wins back-to-back, and start seeing a few 20 footers go in, and then played well again last week.”
Westwood demonstrated sheer confidence in his statement, but his past stats portrayed otherwise. The player finished at tenth in the event place last year, while his best finish was a runner-up spot 11 years ago. Despite a rather
poor record, Westwood hailed Wentworth as one of his favourite courses, as it suited his game-style.
The veteran added, “Doral - I always play that golf course - and I think I love this golf course, this is really going to suit me and the best I've done is 18th. There's a few. Sometimes you just can't explain it. There's no reason
for it, just one of those things. I suppose that's why golf is great - sometimes you just can't put your finger on it.”
The Englishman will be facing tough competition from the field, which is featuring six of the top seven players of the world. Included in the field is world number two Luke Donald, who finished second at Volvo World Match Play
Championship and Martin Kaymer, who is out on a hunt to take the number one seed down. The competition doesn't get any easier for Westwood as a total of eight major winners will be teeing off on Thursday eyeing a victory.
But as Westwood stated, “This is obviously our showpiece event of the year,” the number one seed should be prepared for the massive challenge to defend his throne, while winning the title.
