Lee Westwood and Luke Donald eager to replace Rory McIlroy in OWGR with main focus on wins – Golf News

The two Englishmen, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, are both eager to replace Rory McIlroy on top of the Official World Golf Rankings with a win in the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship, starting from Thursday, March 8, 2012.
McIlroy, who reached the top spot after registering a victory in last week’s Honda Classic, is in danger of losing the charm of being the number one just after one week of his claim.
Luke Donald, who moved to the second position after being replaced by McIlroy, will play alongside him and Westwood in the opening two rounds at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Blue Monster at Doral, Florida.
According to both Westwood and Donald, they are more focused on winning the tournament compared to earning the top position in the world rankings.
According to Donald, grouping him with Westwood and McIlroy will spice up the game. However, they do not seem to be much concerned about the rankings as much as the media and fans are.
Yet, he believes that anything that allows broadcasters to talk about is a good thing for the game and the fans.
"There obviously is some jockeying for position. There isn't one stand-out player right now that certainly is what the world rankings would say," he said.
"When Tiger was number one, no one really talked about the world rankings much, and maybe the big talking point was who was in the top 50, not who was number one," he added.
On the other hand, Westwood commented on the same topic in a totally different way. He said that being number one is the hardest thing in the game of golf.
Therefore, a player must choose another game if he does not enjoy being placed on the top.
"Me and Luke were talking about it on the putting green today. I said, 'Oh, morning, number two,' and he looked at me and nodded and said, 'Yeah, it's sort of a bit of a relief'".
Westwood kept on talking and said that ranking definitely attracts the players and so, the number one position has its own charm.
However, he has always played golf for winning tournaments, not rankings. If the player registers wins in the events he plays, there will be an automatic rise in the rankings.
Therefore, winning and performing well in the tournament should be the main goal of each and every player for the betterment of the game.
