Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods agree Augusta National now offers tougher short game than previous years
Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods will be two of the toughest contestants in next month’s Masters at Augusta National.
The former would be looking to bag his first major title and the later will be hoping to land the title for the fifth time in his career.
The duo, often regarded as close compatriots, agree that the revered Augusta National has gone through several changes in the course of time and the greens are now grassier as compared to their previous rendezvous with the course.
Westwood said, “Tiger and I were discussing it last week, and we were saying the short game around Augusta has changed quite a bit over the last few years. It used to be that there wasn’t a lot of grass around the greens – you could almost see the earth through the grass”.
Westwood has not won a major title in his otherwise stellar career let alone wearing the green jacket at the coveted Augusta National.
He comes from a long line of English golfers of the likes of Luke Donald and Colin Montgomerie who, despite having huge reputations, have not won a major title in their professional careers.
Westwood is eager to wear the green jacket, especially when he is almost heading into the 40’s and is well aware that missing out again this year could be catastrophic to say the least.
He added, “I look forward to the Masters from the moment it finishes the previous year. It’s just one of those tournaments you always want to be involved in”.
Westwood will be pitched against rampaging Rory McIlroy and a resurging Woods, both of whom are the favourites for this year’s green jacket.
No one has more experience of the tricky Augusta National than the former world number one, Woods.
McIlroy, on the other hand, has played amazingly well since the start of the season, surging to the top of the world rankings for the first time in his short career.
He thrashed the field at Augusta National last year, leading the event for the first three opening rounds before he fell for a disastrous final round of 80. He will be returning in top form to land the title.
