Lee Westwood bid goodbye to WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
The world number 3 Lee Westwood, withdrew after crumbling to the injury from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Friday.
Lee Westwood walked out of the Firestone Country club, Ohio USA, where the 12th Bridgestone Invitational is taking place from 3rd August to 8th August. The event is a celebration of the best 80 players of the world.
The English golfer suffered a calf injury at the French Open which took place in the early week of July, 2010. Since then it has been creating problems for the player. The problem took its toll on Friday night, when Lee Westwood decided to give the tournament away and concentrate on his health issues. This is the same problem that pulled the runner up out of the pro-am of the French Open this year. According to the doctors, Lee Westwood has rated to the heat wave that has ruptured plantaris muscle in his right ankle.
Moreover, the only cure for the problem is a long bed rest according to the doctors. As far as Lee Westwood sees it, it will take a long time for him to recover but hopefully till the Ryder Cup his health issues will be gone. After all, a good game originates from a healthy body and mind. This statement was well justified by the performance of the 37-year-old in the second round on Friday when he was seen with a tape wrapped around his ankle and he scored a 76.
Talking about the healthy mind; the first name that comes to the mind is Tiger Woods, as it seems the player is not in a clear state of mind because of his private life. This problem has persisting ever since the starting of December 2009. The consequences of this problem include a terrible performance at the Open with 23rd position, and two consecutive rounds of aggregate 6 over par. The worst is yet to come as two more rounds are left and Tiger Woods is doing nothing to eliminate this issue.
Moreover rumours have it that if Tiger Woods does not win this tournament or fails to manage a spot in top 30, he will be losing his number 1 title to Phil Mickelson. Phil Mickelson is currently number 2, followed by Lee Westwood who is number three. According to the analysts Phil Mickelson is only two rounds away from the number 1 title. Even if he finishes 4th, he will still be taking the title away from the wounded Tiger. Seems like this season is not just good enough for the even numbers of official world golf ranking as Lee Westwood is out and Tiger Woods is threatened. Or else let us say the second name ‘Woods’ is under a black cloud since the starting of 2010.
Moving forward, the top of the leader board has changed since the second round as Bubba Watson is out of the top 10 and Retief Goosen has taken his place by carding 6 birdies with a grand total of 6 under 66 on Friday. Other players that are included in the first group are Justin Leonard and Phil Mickelson with 5 under each.
The second round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational that started on the 6th of August at the Firestone Country club has ended on Friday with Retief Goosen at number one position with a lead of 1 shot, Justine Leonard and Phil Mickelson at number 2 and Lee Westwood out of the tournament. Lee Westwood has decided to call it a day after he realized he could no longer bear the pain arising in his right leg.
According to the media reports, Lee Westwood will not be seen for a very long time on any course. However as soon as he recovers, he will be setting the venue of Ryder Cup at fire which he hopefully will be attending in October 2010.
