Lee Westwood blames his putting for his failure to win the Masters Tournament – Golf News
The world number three, Lee Westwood, has admitted that he had putting weakness that proved to be a hindrance in his way to claim the first major victory of his career at the Masters Tournament, this year.
Westwood looked in a great form throughout the tournament and remained in contention till the end of the tournament. However, he, at times, missed some easy birdie chances that could have earned him a victory in the end.
Consequently, he finished his Masters campaign at eight-under par, two behind the playoff entrants, Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen.
Thereafter, Watson defeated Oosthuizen on the second extra hole to earn the first major victory of his career.
"The story of the week is you have got to putt well to win the Masters and I haven't," Westwood said. "It's the weakness of my game and it's costing me tournaments".
According to his tournament stats, the longest putt he made was on the final hole of the tournament, that was of 10 feet. This speaks of his putting failure in the event.
It has always been the case that the player with good putting gets an advantage over his competitors in the tournament.
Moreover, it marks a difference between getting close and winning the tournament. Similarly, Westwood came close to his first major title win but the bad putting hindered his efforts.
"It's frustrating," he said. "Nothing's dropped for me. I missed an eagle putt on 15 from about six feet and the putt on 18 is the longest I've holed and that was from about 10 feet".
Rumours were also spread, stating his considerations for a change in his putting coach in order to tune up his technique and improve his score in the upcoming events that he will play.
He believes that a little improvement in his putting can bring a huge difference in his results on the leaderboard.
"When you consider the way I putted the first three days there's a lot of positives to take out of it," he stated. "I work hard on my putting but I can't seem to turn it around but when I do I know I'll win”.
This was his 56th appearance in a major event and it was his sixth top-three finish in the last 10 starts that he made. This shows how good he is in playing the major events.
The game analysts believe that his decision of working on his putting is a good one. If he succeeds in bringing positive changes in his technique, a major win will not be a problem for him.
The only need of the hour is to remain consistent while bringing new changes that will help in improving his game on the greens.
