Lee Westwood charged for the US Open at the Olympic Club
The world number three, Lee Westwood’s tight schedule and long distances between the tournament venues have caused him to feel tired prior to the start of the US Open at the Olympic Club, scheduled from June 14 to 17, 2012.
After recording a win in the European Tour’s Nordea Masters on June 9, he flew back to England on Saturday, which is eight time zones away from Bro Hof Slott Golf Club, Stockholm, Sweden.
Thereafter, he again took a flight for San Francisco and reached on Sunday at 2:00 pm local time.
After reaching the Olympic Club, he talked to the reporters and told that he was about to shut down because of the tiring journey he had in the past 24 hours.
"Started shutting down about an hour ago," Westwood said, grinning, in response to British reporter’s query about his body clock. "Must have been the anticipation of coming in here (in the interview room)".
Westwood’s victory in Nordea Masters has given him a boost for the second major championship of the year, as he said that he is in a perfect shape to win the first major title of his career.
Yet, he believes that the course will offer a tough challenge to all the participants because of its difficult layout.
Moreover, US Open has a history of a challenging playing environment, causing the best players in the field to struggle. Therefore, it will be a test of nerves for the hot favourites in the field.
"It is nice to come off a win, with that confidence," Westwood said. "I expect this week to be a tough test. I’ve seen the golf course over the last couple of days. And it’s difficult, like all U.S. Open tests normally are. This is one of tougher ones.
Sets up really well. And tests every aspect of your game".
Westwood has recently changed his putter from PING I10s to I20s during the Nordea Masters. Westwood normally does not change his clubs, as it was his only third change in the last two decades.
Therefore, the golf commentators are expecting something really special from him, especially after his stunning five-stroke victory in Sweden.
