Lee Westwood commits to the European Tour’s Nordea Masters
The world number three Lee Westwood has decided to skip the FedEx St. Jude Classic this year, as he preferred to play the European Tour’s Nordea Masters, scheduled from Wednesday, June 6 to Saturday, June 9, 2012.
Despite grabbing the first and the 11th spot in his last two appearances at the St. Jude Classic, he committed to the event in Sweden this time because of its early schedule, allowing the players to take one extra day to rest prior to the start of the US
Open.
It will be his 57th attempt to earn the maiden major victory of his career. He came close to a victory several times in the last few years, however, he never succeeded in recording one yet.
This time, he has admitted that he does not know how to make preparations for his appearance at the Olympic Club.
"I haven't found the right way yet, so I might as well keep trying different ones," said Westwood, who at Wentworth two weeks ago, confessed to feeling tired after three stints in America and trips to Asia and the Middle East already this year.
"It's difficult to prepare for a West Coast major because nowhere is near," he explained Tuesday.
"If you play Memphis it's still a four to five-hour flight to California, so it's a tussle whether you play in all that heat or you go to Sweden, where there will be steady conditions and it finishes on Saturday".
He is grouped with Peter Hanson and the defending champion Alex Noren for the first two rounds.
In the meantime, Sergio Garcia has also committed to the event this year. However, the world number two Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke have chosen some other paths.
Both the players were previously considering the event on the European Tour. However, McIlroy changed his mind recently and moved to Memphis in order to participate in the FedEx St. Jude Classic.
He desperately needs to make a good finish, as he failed to make the cut in each of the last three events that he played.
In the meantime, Clarke has decided to take a week off prior to the start of the US Open, scheduled for the next week.
